Reaction to Abbott’s Victory
December 2nd, 2009
I am ignoring the typically left-wing propaganda from the ABC and the Fairfax Press. One thing that is certain, given the hysterical reaction from those two media outlets, the left is scared of Abbott and what he could do to Rudd. This is going to get brutal and nasty.
Paul Kelly was left stunned by the vote. The left are not really used to genuine grass roots movements that ignore their media masters:
The shift in the Liberal Party has been dramatic and is probably without parallel in the party’s history. There were no chiefs and no grand plan behind this result. It is truly the Great Conservative Revolt legitimised by grassroot sentiment.
This is probably why Nelson back in early 2008 wanted the party faithful to elect the leader. Considering that they are more conservative than self-described ‘progressives’ like Turnbull and Hockey who at times seem to have joined the wrong party.
Abbott will have an uphill battle though if this reaction from the Canberra press corp is anything to go by:
Abbott’s victory press conference was a typically chaotic affair, with journalists laughing and sarcastically shouting “good on you” when he acknowledged the existence of global warming.
Of course he believes in climate change, just not human induced ‘we are gonna die so save us Rudd with taxation!’ climate change. UK blogging superstar – though I thought his book on Obama was just okay- James Delingpole:
Malcolm Turnbull, the suddenly-ex-leader of Australia’s Liberal party, the first major political victim of the Climategate furore. And his replacement Tony Abbott, the first politician to reap the benefits of the world’s growing scepticism towards ManBearPig. Of the three candidates, he was the only one committed to delaying the Australian government’s proposed Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS).
Climategate definitely helped a number of politicians grow a spine and speak out against socialist doom mongering. The issue has also been given a run on wattsupwiththat, via Bolt. Mark Steyn also mentioned the issue – climategate has had its first political scalp:
Signing on to the climate hooey in effect deprived the Australian people of any choice on the most pressing issue of the day. (By “pressing,” I don’t mean the impending ecopalypse but the gazillion-dollar shakedown of taxpayers allegedly required to prevent it.)
UK Telegraph’s Damian Thompson:
Australian Lefties (who these days are as pant-wettingly PC as the American variety) are shrieking with indignation. The man’s a global warming sceptic! A Right-wing Catholic! A vigorous anti-abortion campaigner! A friend of Cardinal George Pell, who is also a climate change sceptic!
….I doubt that even the BBC will be able to match the paranoia of the Aussie media, which loathes Tony Abbott, not least for his friendship with Pell.
This is why so many in the media think Abbott is unelectable – even though Rudd is also meant to be a social conservative and religious as well. Double standard at work.

I have just found this site today. Great insights , great comments. I could not agree more on the anti Abbott ABC bias and their refusal to see Abbott as an acceptable leader. It is no wonder that their preferred candidate was Hockey who Rudd would eat for breakfast like he did on chanel sevens’s Sunrise. But lets not forget Laurie Oaks who gave viewers the impression of absolute disgust at Abbotts win and of course all comments have to be prefaced with a reminding the viewers of Abbott’s religion and snide comments including names like the “mad monk” and “captain catholic”.

Can it be? Can it truly be? A politician who will actually try to apply common sense to politics?
