In the year 2000 I was a new arrival to Australian shores, and having trouble getting a job. After working for 1 month for one of the Job Network agencies as a Work for the Dole recruitment officer, I was summarily marched off the premises and paid 2 months' in advance. The reason: I uncovered a kick back scheme between the agency and its Work for the Dole project providers and wrote a report about it to the job agency's management. The Job Network agency was in Chatswood in Sydney, and Tony Abbot was well-known to be a personal friend and advisor to the agency's CEO. The agency supported the misrepresentation of its Work for the Dole projects to not offer sign-up choice to the participants: It allowed a favoured project company to attend the Work for the Dole meetings and enforce sign-up to their own projects without participant choice. I was threatened by the project company's representative (an Australian TV celebrity) not to do anything about it: he asked me "Do you know who I am?", followed by a promise that I won't keep my job. And he was right. Sending the report to the ACCC at the time also got no response.

The senate report below further supports Tony Abbott's lack of integrity in regards to the Job Network scheme:
